Whether the argument concerns what year K.C. Jones was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, or who the great figures of Iraqi mythology might be, or what famous people originally hailed from New Hampshire, a dip into these pages will prove you right or wrong.

There are three main sections: The Arts; Economics, Business and Finance; and Science and Technology. Each chapter (Dance, Geography, Mathematics, Literature and Drama, Medicine, Sports, etc) starts off with a succinct but comprehensive history. For example, “Architecture” moves from the Paleolithic to Skyscrapers in 11 pages, managing to define Byzantine and list the great works of Frank Lloyd Wright without skipping the Baroque. Each chapter highlights the famous people in its field and concludes with a glossary of terms.

“Times” writers have contributed essays throughout, including Steve Kinzer on Jelly Roll Morton, Jane Brody on Hypertension, and Nicholas Wade on the future of human evolution. The back of the book is a treasure trove of facts: a language usage guide, a crossword puzzle dictionary, vital statistics of the world’s nations and the U.S. states, a list of award-winners, a dictionary of food, a wine primer, a guide to nutrition, and a biographical dictionary of 1,000 people. This is one of those books you didn’t know you needed till you had it.

Further they should be easy to find (well indexed), the page referenced should be easy to find, and the information on the page should be easy to distinguish from the rest of the page. ==Well I turned to the index, yup, there was Uruguay – page 857. ‘Turned to page 857, this was in the section Nations of the World, Uruguay was in bold face type and underlined in the middle of the left hand column. A couple of inches from the top of the Uruguay entry it said, Capital: Montevideo. The book certainly passed the first test. ==Then I started flipping through the book. I found the Hundred Words Most Frequently Misspelled – I won’t bother to mention how many of these I frequently mizzpel. ==As with any of these omnibus type books, the selection of what material to include is always a problem. You can’t put in everything and still be able to lift it. So far, everything I’ve looked for I’ve found, what more can I add.

Well, duh. This book doesn’t have anything you couldn’t find in the library, or faster yet, online. The entire point is the organization, having everything at hand in a concise manner. You’d have to do some searching and clicking to get all the information about one subject that this book stuffs into a few pages, and you wouldn’t get them in concise, logical order without repetition. Obviously, this book doesn’t go ultra in depth or cover every subject area. Even whole encyclopedia sets can’t do that. The best part of the book, in my opinion, is it tells you what you need to know. If you want to be fairly knowledgeable in any given subject really quickly, its useful to not have to read a lot of books/internet sources and then figure out what part of the information you can/should retain.

Just when you thought Garmin had cornered the market on powerful, affordable, and effective wrist-mounted GPS devices, here comes the Forerunner 305. The release of this device is a major accomplishment from a design and engineering science perspective. This isn’t just marketing-speak; the Forerunner 305 is the most accurate, most dependable wrist-mounted performance and GPS tracking tool we’ve ever tested. Yes, it’s that good. While no device this compact may do everything (yet), the 305 pushes the boundaries of what is possible from something strapped around your wrist.

I’ve had it for about three weeks, and have used it on 12 workouts so far. I use it primarily for running, with biking a secondary usage. The main reason I wanted it was for the instantaneous readout of distance, running pace and heart rate, the latter needed for the speed work I want to do this running season.

The core functionality (distance and heart rate monitoring) works perfectly. There’s none of the signal drops I’ve had with other heart monitors. Once the satellites are initially acquired, I’ve only had one dropout when I was outside. The initial acquisition of the satellites can be quirky and can take some time. The accuracy (according to the readout) is +/- 25ft, depending on how many satellites can be found. I’ve compared the distance measurement on the GPS with a known, measured distance on one of the trails I run on (the Chicago lakefront path). The GPS always increments a mile when I’m within 5 or 10 feet of the mile marker sign on the path. Well, I guess that’s the least I should expect from a $350 GPS unit! Of course it’s bigger than a normal running stopwatch, but that hasn’t bothered me at all. The heart rate strap is also very comfortable and well-designed.

The display is crisp and has one outstanding feature: The information presented on the various pages can be completely user-customized. The default screen layout is rather poor, but in just a few steps I could replace it with the information I wanted to see while I run. There are almost 40 different data fields you can choose from for display. Examples: current pace, average lap pace, average run pace, heartrate, distance.

The only disappointment is the point-in-time (instantaneous) pace measurement: It varies wildly during a run. I see swings as big as +/- 3 minutes/mile. I’m a marathoner and I know my pace is fairly consistent during a run. I just looked at my run today, and according to the data the first mile varied from 5:57/mile to 12:06 mile. I suspect the problem is either in the averaging algorithm (too short a distance?), or in the uncertainty that results from different satellites coming in and out of view. The variations seem to get worse under tree cover compared with an open area. Luckily there’s a lap-average pace that can be presented, and at least that value is useful and more accurate. The bottom line is that you can’t look at the watch and say “right now I’m running 9 mins/mile”. There is the ability to specify a pace smoothing factor, but I have it maxed out and still see the variations. The elevation readout also seems inaccurate, but that isn’t important to me.

Upload of workout data to the PC software (Training Center) is transparent. The PC software is very good for presenting time/distance/pace/heartrate/calorie data. However the maps it shows are very crude. I’ve worked a bit with one of the online, subscription services (MotionBased). That looks really good and provides some additional functionality beyond the included Training Center software, although I still haven’t decided if it’s worth the $$$ yet for long-term data storage. MotionBased allows export to Google Earth, and it’s tremendously cool to see your running path superimposed on a satellite image. You can recharge the unit through the USB port on your computer, although it’s slower than using the dedicated recharger.

I had hoped that owning this device would prove motivational for me, and indeed it has. I can’t imagine running or biking without it. Updating my training log is trivial now: Plug this thing into my computer, and it’s done. My hope is that a future software update will do something about the pace calculation (maybe a few additional levels of smoothing?). If so, the Forerunner 305 would earn 5 stars+++.

Positives:

Flawless heart rate sampling
Great distance measuring and lap-average pace calculation
Seamless integration with a PC
Fully-automatic training log update
User-customizable display

Negatives;

Wildly-varying pace readout.

R. Wu
I use mine for cycling and running, the direct link to see your workouts mapped on GOOGLE EARTH is FANTASTIC!!!! (the included software is far more stable than the junk Polar included with their HRM’s.

Heart rate strap with replaceable battery is coded and comfortable. It’s better in my opinion than the Polar products (of which I’ve owned three)

This is much better than the Forerunner 201 which I previously owned (locks on satellites 10 times faster) and I’d avoid the 405 unless you really want to use this watch as a normal day to day wristwatch (check out the 405 reviews)

One nice feature is being able to customize the display screens. Another review criticized the 305 for the numbers being too small to read while exercising. I don’t have an issue but would point out that you can significantly increase the size of the display by simply displaying fewer fields.

My only complaint is that it’s easy to leave it on and run the battery down – which is a bummer if you’re just about to work out. I wish there was an “auto off” feature which would shut it down if it detects no movement or heart rate within an hour or so. Fortunately, with Li-Ion batteries, as little as a 10 minute charge gives you enough juice for a 90 minute run.

Leuzinger
With a few one-star reviews, I was a bit hesitant to order this. Now, after two weeks of use (10 runs of 2 to 2.5 miles each), I have no regrets with the purchase whatsoever.

I haven’t had any of the problems reported by any of the one-star reviewers. It syncs to the satellite in a reasonable* amount of time, seems to track my pace very well, tracks distance well, and the heart rate monitor seems WAY more accurate than the dedicated exercise machines at my local gym.

*by reasonable, it does take a minute or two to sync to the satellites each time. That’s the only thing I could possibly think of improving, but it’s not a big deal. Being the super-impatient person I am, I often turn on the watch, set it on my front porch, go back in and change into my running outfit, and by the time I come back out it’s ready to go.

I haven’t seen the pacing issues others have reported. I’m a beginning runner… but if I keep a solid pace… it reports about 10mins/mile… if I push a little harder… about 9mins/mile… if I let up… about 11mins/mile. It seems very consistent over my entire 2-2.5 mile run.

I have a 2.1 mile run where I’ve done the same exact route about 6 times… and when I compare the maps of each run… they overlap almost exactly.

I have thyroid and heart issues, and this watch gives me the confidence to know I’m not exceeding my max hr for too long (I can easily get into the 180′s) and gives me the feedback and stats to keep me motivated.

Last but not least, I’ve bought dozens and dozens of items from Amazon over the years, and this is the first review I’ve taken the time to write – hope that gives you an indication of how happy I am with this product.

Frisina
I have headphones on most of the day – every day. I was looking for a new pair, because the previous, behind the head, style really irritated me. So, I researched for quite a while before I found these. I was looking for a pair that was NOT over the ear, since I didn’t want that weight and feel all day long. I was also looking for the single wire from one side and volume control. I would have settled for less, but luckily found these.

I am extremely impressed with the sound blocking. I was absolutely shocked at how much sound is blocked. It just doesn’t seem possible, considering their small size. It’s kinda weird actually. Because I wear them all day, there are times when the noise blocking is actually a hindrance, so I wind up moving one side off the ear so I can hear my surroundings. It’s not ideal, but that is not the fault of the headphones.

They are very comfortable. I can literally wear them for 8 hours straight without the least bit of discomfort. Again, pretty amazing. I did experience more warmth than desired on my ears at first, but within a couple hours that was gone. I guess I got used to it.

I am impressed with the build quality. I was very happy to see that the entire headband is metal reinforced, with metal hinges. It just has a nice solid feel. I’ve only had them for a few weeks now, so I can’t speak to longevity, but I see no weak links so far.

I can’t understand the complaints of “weak” bass response. I believe these phones provide a very balanced range, with everything clear and crisp from high to low. I suppose if you’re expecting your head to thump, like every third Honda Civic with 8 subwoofers, weed-eater exhaust note, and 26″ rims, you might be disappointed. However, if you would like your music to sound realistic – resembling closely the recording, these will probably satisfy. Keep in mind these are $50 headphones. Don’t expect them to outperform a pair of $100+ studio monitors. However, having said that, I don’t want to wear studio monitors for 8 hours a day.

Very pleased.

UPDATE: Recently I was able to compare, side by side, these headphones to my brother’s Sony MDR-V6 studio monitors. The studio monitors have better sound isolation, and better base response, as you’d expect. however, I was really impressed with how close these came to matching the overall performance, considering the diminutive size compared to the over-the-ear studio monitors.

UPDATE: Purchased in February, now it is December, and they have survived so far. I keep them in the storage bag, and try to be careful with them, since the single cable is so thin. Even after (reluctantly) letting my teenage daugther use them occasionally, they still work fine. I was a little worried about the wire or the volume control flaking out, but so far so good.

My experience with the 1st gens was that they were great overall, although they had the following cons:

1. The cable was made up of two individual wires. This meant that the cable would get tangled upon itself and just about every time id put them on, I would have to spin the cable around to get it straightened
2. The cable split to both ear pieces. This resulted in the cable always being directly under your chin which could at times be awkward
3. Extended use (1 hour or more) made my ears get sweaty, regardless of volume

The 2nd gens have corrected each of the above mentioned issues. The cable is one solid wire, meaning no tangles. The cable only connects to the LEFT ear piece, meaning that the wire goes down more gracefully by the side of your face. Ive worn them to the gym 3 or 4 times, and have not experienced much ear-sweat, if any.

Quality/Comfort
I’m not an audiophile, but in my opinion the sound quality is great for gym usage with hip hop/rock/techno playlists. The headphones block out the music playing at my gym quite nicely, which is critical because Lifetime Fitness has invested in a quality sound system which they use to blast Britney Spears and Rihanna all day. They are as comfortable as any other headphone I’ve ever worn, although I haven’t used that many well known headphones besides the 1st Gens and some lower priced Sennheiser models.

Specs:
The cable is roughly 4 feet long, with the volume controller being about 1 foot away from the end of the cord. One other aspect of the volume controller that is worth noting is that it has a “clip” mechanism on the back of it that allows you to attach it to your shirt/pants/etc. They are CLOSED style, which means that nearby people will NOT be able to hear them… making them a nice option for work environments. One more nice feature is that you can turn the ear pieces 90 degrees (so that if you are wearing the headphones around your neck, the ear pieces will be pointing outwards) to make them more collapsible for storage. You can also point the ear cups outwards and play music for friends or yourself.

Cons:
The only CON I’m aware of so far is that they don’t collapse quite as nicely as the 1st Gens because the volume controller gets in the way. They still collapse though (just not as well), which allows for more convenient storage than 95% of decent sounding portable headphones.

Summary:
If I was in the market for a portable headphone, I would buy these again… as long as they were within $20 of the first generation version.

These do not block all outside noises but they do muffle them and they also do not leak music as to disturb others around you. Great for desk use at work. The headphones can also be used safely while jogging outside because they still allow you to hear things around you, just not as much as open headphones. The sound quality is excellent and much improved over the original PX 200s. The in line volume adjustment comes in very handy. The cord also comes out of the left ear piece which is also a very nice feature. The cord is a different texture that feels really smooth and elegant. These are very sturdily built and are much sturdier than the former PX 200s. Skip the PX 200s and purchase the PX 200-IIs. You will not regret this great Sennheiser purchase.

I had to get a home phone to aide for the security system, so when I researched some cordless phones, I came across this Panasonic device. I don’t care much for a home phone as I have lived without one for several years, but this allows a home phone back in my life.

Link-to-cell is incredible. This feature allows me to answer and make calls using my cell phone. I don’t have to search around the house for the cell…just keep it in the same place. Pairing was extremely simple, but you will need to read the instructions to navigate the hidden settings menu and whatnot(this is just a one time thing). I literally walked in the house and it paired automatically in about 30 seconds. The memory holds 3034 contacts. Is that too much? Maybe..but during setup, I just let my phone (Droid Incredible) bluetooth all my 400 contacts over…Again, real simple.

Already lost power-
Phone works great. The base receives power from the charged unit and powers the reception to the other handsets as well. The older panasonic models do not have this feature…

Ringtones-
All the tones and melodies are terrible, but when your cell rings, it can mimic the ringtone which is good. I’m just surprised the technology of ringtones hasn’t hit the home phone yet???

Headset-
The fiancee uses a headset, and the manual headset does work with this model. The box claims bt headsets work as well (havent tried it).

Multiple lines-
I can make a call using my cellphone line, and make a call using the landline as well at the same time. So you won’t be disrupted if someone clicks in.

The speaker quality and phone reception were fine, in my wi-fi/wireless surround sound/million wireless devices condo.

My review above is geared to what I was interested in this phone. If I missed anything..or you have a question, I would be more than happy to test and find the answer for you.

I am happy with this purchase, and will update this review with features/cool things as I encounter them:)

****UPDATE*** 26Jan2012
So I’ve had this handset system for several months now and I’ve learned a couple of things to pass on here..

Additional pros-
I have comcast for phone service, and you can program your voicemail settings into the phone for easy access if you prefer that service to the built in answering service.

Speaker phone works well, even on the lowest setting it’s fairly loud.

Call block is easy to use. Go to caller id and press save number. It prompts to address book or call block. Done. What it will do in the future- ring once and then silence.

Base unit- I haven’t been downstairs to adjust the base unit since I set it up. All the handsets play voicemail, so the one thing you can do on the base and not the units- set up bluetooth. So I definitely dig this ecosystem.

Cons-
The intercom feature isn’t a normal intercom feature. It should be called a page feature. You have to go into the menu and dail a handset. The handset rings for that user to pick up…so it’s definitely not a true intercom at all.

Fantastic
By C. James
I had no idea this Cell to Cordless Bluetooth feature existed and it is one of the single best technology investments I have made in a very long time.

I have a personal cell phone, a work cell phone (Blackberry), and a home phone land line, and for years have had to either carry my cell phones around the house with me or go running over to where ever they are charging at the moment when a call comes in.

Well no more. The Panasonic KX-TG7643M came to my attention while looking around for a Father’s Day gift. It is a Speaker Phone, Answering Machine, has Battery Back-Up, and I got the Base Unit and 3 handset option, and the keypad in the base unit.

First the star feature, Bluetooth link to my cell phone. Out of the box the manual is a little daunting and obviously Panasonic knew this and had a quick start on the inside cover for very basic operation but including cell phone pairing and a cheat sheet in addition to the full manual for more commonly used advanced feature, very nice balance of documentation, a rare thing these days.

Out of the box it was about 5 minutes to the point of trying to link my first cell to it, less than a minute later it was done, same for my second cell phone.

Next I transferred in the phone books from each cell phone, and in under a minute for each it added the 300 or so numbers on my two cell phones and the nice surprise is that it keeps each phone book in it’s own group, however you can look at them combined also.

So for some test, the buttons for Cell 1 and Cell 2 had turned green meaning they were ready to go so I used Cell one to call cell 2 and answered cell 2 from the Panasonic base unit, worked perfectly.

Next I called out using Cell 1 and then Cell 2, again both worked perfectly. I then have my friend call each of the cell phones and I had configured the Panasonic to use the cell phones own ring tone for each, and so when it rang it had the cell phone ring tone letting me know which phone the call was coming in on, it also tells you on the base unit display and the handset display which line it is using.

I originated a cell phone call through the pani and then picked up the phone and left the house, it linked control back to the cell phone and there as not even so much as a beep or click, the call continued now from the cell unit. Works coming home while on a cell call, as soon as you get in the house (one minute actually) the cell auto links back the to pani and you can continue the call from the base unit or any of the handsets.

Can’t tell you know nice it is to have all of this in one consolidated system now. So far so good, however I was replacing a Motorola cordless phone system that I had done a lot of homework of to get a great speaker phone, something I use a lot, and so I was a little worried that the pani might be crummy as most are, but it is actually as good as the Motorola was so no issues, you make make it plenty loud, and talk at a normal level.

Caller ID is has a voice feature and will say the Caller ID information out loud if you turn it on, this is really nice on the handset in the bedroom in that I can just listen to know if I need to pick up or not, no need to try to sit up enough to read the display while half asleep.

The last feature I will really highlight is the battery back-up. This is unlike most cordless phones offer, the batter back-up does not just save your settings until power is returned, it actually power the base unit and allows you to using any of the handsets during a power failure.

It has a ton of other features and they are pretty much as good or better than you find on any of the phones these days, lots of customization options, ability to link in your cell phone and land line voice mail, block specific phone numbers (not by the phone company, on your phone), set ring-tones to numbers, decide which handsets or set all to be able to get and make calls over the cell phones, and you can even use this with no land line at all, just tell it to only use the cell line(s) and it will but seem like a typical land line call. Oh you can also have a Bluetooth or wired headset if you don’t like speaker phones for hands free operation.

If you have one or two cell phones and chase them around the house, hit dead spots in the house, want to have your cell phone charging and not be tethered to the wall while taking calls on it at home, want to use those free or cheap off-hour minutes from your cell but using a nice home phone, then this is a great answer and for a pretty good price.

They mostly focus on the positives of the phone. Other reviewers have said basicly how I feel. It is a pretty good phone, but I wish it could be made better by improvements in the shortcomings listed below.
I will give my thoughts more on what I feel are some shortcomings.

1. The phone feels cheap, compared to older phones I have had in the past including AT&T and VTECH and others. For me, not the most comfortable to hold.

2. Handset volume is definitely lower compared to older phones I have had in past.

3. The display name of handset is limited in character length and so are names in address book.

4. Software driven menu is not the easiest to navigate. You might need the manual handy to figure things out. Not the most intuitive design.

5. Volume control is hard to adjust during call. You have to take phone away from ear to adjust. It would have been nice to have volume control on side of phone.

6. No dedicated intercom button. You have to press “menu” button then scroll down with center pad and get to “Intercom”. Once again, it would be nice to have a dedicated intercom button.

7. Mailbox system is pretty basic. Would be nice to have multiple mailboxes. At least three…Mailbox 1 for dad, Mailbox 2 for wife….you get the idea. My old Vtech had 3 mailboxes. Worked great!

8. Caller ID list needs multiple presses to see list. WTF? Should go directly to Caller ID list.

This camera does have some great features, some of which I have not even had time to use yet. The main draw, however, (other than the size) is that it is simple and easy to use. There are tons of point and shoot cameras out there, and there is no use being snobby over which one you buy, because they all do pretty much the same thing. This one is great for the price. You could get a nicer camera, but for 90% of the people in the market for a digital camera, this will do what you need and want it to, and more.

I use mine mainly for snapshots and spontaneous pictures with friends and the like. However, I do enjoy photography, and I have experience with SLR cameras as well (and I own one). Therefore, I also sometimes take artistic shots. This camera does it all unless you are a professional photographer, in which case, you already know you need a different camera.

The size is perfect. This will even fit in small pockets on skinny jeans or whatever. The case I bought with the camera adds some bulk, but the camera is so slim, even the case fits in my pockets comfortably.

I use Amazon Student Prime, so shipping is never a hassle. I can’t really comment on other shipping speeds. The package was simple, but the camera box protects the camera with styrofoam and cardboard, and the shipping box used inflated plastic bags to keep the camera box safe. Someone would really have to try to damage the camera to manage it.

Amazon lists plenty of features of this camera, but here is my list:

RECHARGEABLE!
Records HD movies with one button
Big LCD screen on back to help compose pictures in a size you can actually see
19 scenes to choose from to assist in getting a better picture
Pet Focus will find your pet’s face and once focused, will shoot the picture
There are several cool filters like selective coloring, a miniature effect and a fisheye effect
Is tiny and lightweight
Comes in cool colors
This camera will even warn you if it thinks someone blinked.

Bottom line: This camera is what you want. I search for weeks or longer before deciding to buy something, and I chose this camera. For a point and shoot, it has everything you need, and so many things you didn’t even know you wanted. Unless you don’t actually know what you’re looking for, you won’t regret buying this camera.

I bought this camera because I was in need of a camera update and the cell phone camera on my G2 wasn’t cutting it.

When I took this think out of the box for the first time I was glad to notice that it’s small and thin and fits nicely in my pocket. My old camera was much bulkier and I couldn’t carry it in my pocket without a strange looking bulge in my pants that made me look like an idiot.

I am not a digital photographer so I bought this camera as more of a point-and-shoot camera. I wanted a camera that I could snap a quick picture that would have lots of details and look pretty nice without too much photo editing. Normally when I take a picture I am wanting a picture of my friends or myself at a certain event or next to a landmark etc… So I wanted a camera that would be simple but still take a sweet picture. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had people trying to snap a picture for me only to not be able to get my old camera to work right and the picture(s) turn out horribly. Like I want to load a fuzzy blur up onto my Facebook page.

That being said, this camera can also cause difficulties with the technologically retarded. This camera has to achieve a “focus” before it will snap a picture. Sometimes you can push down the button trying to take a picture and the “focus” will be off and it won’t even snap a photo at all. For those special individuals, who for some reason are always snapping my photos, this can cause extreme problems with their abilities to be able get the camera to function.

Now you may be asking yourself why I would have rated the camera so high and said that it rocks and then ripping it a new one, but I just wanted to let you know the only problem that I have had with it so far. This camera perhaps is not the easiest camera to use, but if you spend 5 minutes to learn how it works then you will be able to get excellent pictures from it.

The camera’s picture taking mode basically has 4 different options, Auto mode, Scene mode, Smart portrait, and Subject tracking. In my experience so far with this camera I have noticed that the Auto-mode isn’t always perfect. I may have to take a bunch of pictures, before I can get the picture looking like I want it to look. To be honest I am a bit picky with my pictures though. Many times when I am having somebody else snap a picture for me that can be quite an annoyance. The Auto-mode definitely works better on landscapes than it does for people (in my opinion).

The scene-selector mode is sweet when I am the one taking the picture there are 15+ differing options that optimize the camera for different types of pictures such as: sunset, portrait, pet, beach, party/indoor, etc. I gave up even trying to teach the technologically handicapped this mode after the 2nd attempt.
The mode that has been the most useful for me has been the Smart-portrait mode. This mode basically finds a couple of people’s faces and then focuses the picture on them. Since the majority of the time I am taking pictures of people I have found this to be an amazing option. I use this mode for 90% of my pictures. I get pictures that look amazing and I usually give the camera to other people in this mode although sometimes it won’t take a picture and they will have to “refocus” the camera by re-pressing the button.

The smart tracking picture mode has honestly not been something that I have needed yet but I suppose it takes pictures of moving objects or something like that.
I could ramble on more but I figure that this should be sufficient for now. Overall this camera takes great pictures, they look sweet in print and they are very photoshopable (is that actually a word?) and look great in print form and also on the web.

Whalen
To put this in context, we purchased this camera as one of a handful of point-and-shoots; we bought a Nikon D90 shortly before having our first child, which is a stellar DSLR, to add to an old Panasonic Lumix point-and-shoot that did take pretty good pictures, despite an excessively bright flash. After a couple of years, we wanted to ‘downgrade’ back to to point-and-shoot cameras, given that ours is about 5 years old, and newer ones are both more high-tech and relatively inexpensive for the given level of technology. We bought ‘a few’ to serve a couple of more or less specific roles, all shy of the DSLR’s “big heavy super-high-quality photograph field cannon” role. The purpose of this one was to be… well, the cheap one. The everyday, easy-to-use, no-brainer, compact and lightweight and easy for my wife to put in the diaper bag and take to the museum or the park with the kids. Cheap enough that if you lost it or it got scratched by car keys, no big deal, nice enough to take good basic photos but otherwise no particularly fancy features.

Now, put in that context, time for the inevitable ‘pros’ and ‘cons’.

Pros:
- Extremely compact, lightweight, ‘sexy’ design with chrome details around silver metal body
- Fast start-up, about 2.5 seconds to power up
- Continuous shooting can get maybe a hair more than 1 picture per second. Specs list as 0.7s intervals.
- Battery life seems to be good so far, about 200 pictures and several videos over the course of 3 days with all varieties of flash and zoom and the battery still indicates fully charged
- Zoom is pretty powerful for such a compact camera

Cons:
- Skittish. It’s hard to get a clear picture from the thing even with a steady hand. Image stabilization does nothing as far as I can tell.
- Because of the former, producing sharp pictures with continuous shooting is pretty much hopeless
- Focus is hopeless in ISO3200. No, with any automatic or manual setting, with or without the flash, focus is hopeless. About 1 out of every 4 pictures came out well-focused. Even focused pictures seem to have blurry points in the same range as other objects that are at the same distance, even near the center of the scene. This is even for things like city scenes in full daylight.
- Abandon all hope, ye who shoot photos indoors… focus is abysmal. Did I already make this point?
- Because the focus is so poor, zooming in on anything, even a little, is absolutely and totally hopeless. Taking pictures of animals at the museum came out occasionally reasonably focused; zooming in as little as 2x produced worthless blurry shot after worthless blurry shot
- As with pretty much every point-and-shoot, the flash creates a scene completely washed out with white light – needs to be diffused.
- Very slow to become responsive after a photo; with or without a photo review, the camera takes about 5s to become responsive and available for another photo. This appears to be the case with 3mp the same as 14mp. Just very, very, very slow.
- Very slow to delete a picture; deleting a picture you don’t like takes 3 clicks, then about 3 seconds to complete the operation. It’s a little surprising how any device (phone, camera, gps, tablet, anything) could take that long to complete a simple operation…
- The shutter speed is too slow or simply wrong; if you have kids, who are naturally always in motion, they’ll be a blur even if they’re standing still to pose for a photo.
- Slow to actually fire a shot after zooming and pushing the button – sometimes 1 to 2 second delay, which means, the subject (kids!) is often simply gone by the time it actually shoots.
- Grainy. Even in broad daylight, color fields on high-res pics, like buildings and peoples’ faces, is grainy and pixellated with blotchy color tones.
- Video. Can’t record smoothly, even at lower resolution, with a high-quality Class 6 SDHC card. Don’t bother with video.

To be perfectly fair and objective, I took this camera and our Samsung ST-95 outside and took two shots per camera, of each of five subjects, in the same resolution, at the same time. I chose the sharper of the two photos from each camera and renamed the file generically. I then brought up the photos on our 1080p 55″ TV – the largest-format, highest-resolution screen in the house. I showed them to my wife and asked her to choose “before” and “after”, letting her know that I had swapped the order of the pictures randomly (so that A wasn’t always the Nikon, B wasn’t always the Samsung). In 5 out of 5 cases, she picked (and I agreed) the Samsung’s pictures, simply on the focus. The Nikon just can’t focus correctly. For example, on the back patio, the kids’ tricycle is relatively focused, but the grill right beside it – both near the center of the shot – is entirely blurred out. All of my subjects were stationary out of necessity; I could not get a single clear picture of the kids or dogs with the Nikon, so there was no relevant comparison to be made. Using “scenes” to balance the settings made absolutely no difference on focus, only color balance.

Overall, this camera is a fine solution if you don’t expect much and you won’t do much with it. You could shoot some video or take pictures of inert objects at medium range in full daylight and maybe one out of every two or three photos will be focused enough to pass a cursory inspection (don’t look too close), but beyond that I’m afraid this camera just can’t perform acceptably. It’ll capture images, but they won’t be GOOD. Despite the aforementioned purpose for which we bought this camera, we’ll probably take around one of the better / other ones instead. It’s really just about as well not to take a picture of those ‘precious moments’, as to attempt to do so with this camera. Other folks who have claimed that they are satisfied with this camera just can’t be looking very closely at their pictures; after three outings and a few hundred pictures I am just amazed at how poor the quality of the shots are, in every environment, every light, every kind of subject. It’s not for lack of use or lack of knowledge/experience with digital cameras; this really just has an extremely poor-quality sensor and processor and, I would assume, sub-standard firmware.

I suggest looking at other entry-level offerings such as Samsung ST-65. Or, go for a mid-range camera. You really should only consider this camera if the looks of the camera itself matter a whole lot more than the quality of the pictures it can take – and, if the quality of the pictures it takes don’t matter much at all to you. If you do care about the ability to capture images, this camera will not be satisfactory.

I do not recommend this camera.

Patric
I just picked this up and it’s a very nice shelf system. It’s not going to shake the walls at high volume, but if you were looking for that much power, you wouldn’t be looking at a shelf system to begin with. The true test of quality sound comes at the lower end of the volume knob. Here is where this unit excels. No hissing or crackling noise and the bass is rich and pure and sounds dynamite. I played a burn job from mp3 files and I was stunned at just how good this unit really does sound! Mind you, this system does have a wee bit more power than comparable units, so you can crank the volume up loud enough for most people’s tastes and there is no sound distortion at the high end, either. It’s also pretty easy to mount on the wall, if so desired. It does come with a stand, which suffices well enough, if you don’t feel like drilling into your walls. I only have one complaint and it’s a minor one. While the speakers attach to the unit as seen in the pic, Philips should have also enabled you to be able to mount the speakers onto a wall, apart from the unit, to achieve a much better stereo sound. I have a speaker on the nightstand on each side of the bed and when I lie down to relax with some good tunes, it sounds simply fantastic. So, sound like a good deal? It is, and for a great price, too! Just make sure you have some extra speaker wire handy, as there’s not that much attached to each speaker to begin with. Trust me on this. For the price being asked, in my opinion, sound byte for sound byte, this is one of the best shelf units out there. I listened to a lot of small systems in the up to and a little above the one hundred and fifty level and this system won hands down every time. A nice added bonus feature is that it was also the most eye appealing, too!

L. Haesche
I bought this after reading 2 reviews on Amazon which were favorable. It skipped CDs after 4 months in my office. Sounds great, looks great… but rate it zero for durability. The repair or shipping for repairs will probably cost at least half the buying price. Disappointed.

There is a workaround with the aux inputs and another player, and I like the sound I’m hearing, but its not a keeper. I tried the radio, and I’m not tuning into my favourite am stations either. If Phillips would figure out and solve these bugs this would be a great little system, but alas it’s not. I have much better luck with sony products; phillips/magnavox always have ghosts in their machines. Be warned!

Paint coming off, some keys sticking or unresponsive, backlight occasionally cutting out, etc. Despite this, I’d held off on getting a replacement for several reasons. Particularly, the 2nd generation G15 had only 6 macro keys, yet was still more expensive for reasons I can’t fathom. The G110 seemed more like what I was looking for, but still only had 12 G-keys. Ditto the G19, which is probably also the most expensive keyboard on the market. I’m used to having 18 and probably can’t live without that many now. Enter the G510, which I’ve found to be a worthy replacement that is the true successor to the original G15.

Aside from jumbling up the numeric designation, Logitech made several changes to the basic design. The LCD display is now backlit but also smaller and no longer collapsible. The key backlighting has customizable color that is bound to macro keysets. The USB plugs in the back are gone, replaced by a headphone/mic jack that works through the same USB link. A few things are also moved around, such as the ESC key and media controls (moved a bit left and to the right above the num pad, respectively). Also gone are the wire guides in the back panel, and the media controls have been souped up with a barrel volume adjust instead of a wheel. Additionally, the G510 is significantly more compact than the old G15, which is somewhat of a relief for those like me with cramped desk space. In general, the function keys (MR, M1-3, etc.) are larger and have a softer feel to them; it sometimes took a bit of mashing to get them to trigger on my old G15.

The 18 macro keys are effectively unchanged, as is the software. The feet are about the same (which is to say, pretty short) and the feel is very similar. The game mode slider is still there, as is the backlight on/off key. Generally speaking, unless you frequently hit ESC or use the media keys, you’ll not notice anything different going from the 1st gen G15 to this keyboard.

Regarding the loss of the USB ports- I did use one of them to hook up my mouse, but I found in general that few things worked on them due to the power consumption of the keyboard itself. Even hooking up peripherals seemed to make them less responsive, and so I don’t really miss having them. The audio jacks are a better idea; they work well and are much more easily accessible than the ones on the front/rear of my tower. The Logitech G-series profiler hasn’t changed a great deal since version 1.0: it still has issues detecting when certain games are running, especially games that don’t specifically support it. This isn’t too big a problem for me, as I only usually play 2-3 games at a time anyway, so the default configuration is fine for covering them all. As before, there’s quite a few apps you can run on the LCD if you care to; standard ones now include a profile selector that interfaces with the profiler if you’d rather use the LCD instead of your PC. You can also load profiles onto the keyboard itself if you expect to be using it on computers without the software installed.

About my only gripe with the G510 is that- as with the 2nd gen G15 keyboard- it’s significantly more expensive than the old G15 was. It looks prettier and is supposedly USB 2.0 vs 1.0 which presumably increases response time (haven’t really noticed a difference yet) but is otherwise effectively the same keyboard with some cosmetic tweaks. Still, I suppose it’s comparable in cost to Logitech’s other gaming boards, and it’s not like you’ll be buying one every year. As with the G15, the G510 caters towards the hardcore gaming crowd; it works fine for more mundane applications, but is massive overkill for something like run-of-the-mill word processing. There are some uses for the macro keys in office work, especially if you’re a programmer, but it’s a bit of a steep price for just that- and in such cases the LCD, game mode, and backlighting are pretty useless. Overall, for gaming purposes, the G510 is an awesome product that- once you’ve gotten in the habit of using the macro keys- will be very hard for you to live without.

They’ve created an interesting and (usually) easy to follow line of keyboards that range from being perfectly competent (G110) to being absolutely wonderful (G19, G13). Sitting in the middle at one point was the G15. The G15 had very similar features to the G110 (which was a refresh of the G11). It came with an LCD screen where the G110 had none. The only one up the G110 had was in the programmable key department. On the side of all of the G series keyboards is a row of G-keys, which allowed you to do a variety of things, like program specific key strokes or even develop macros. All of these functions are controlled by software, that allows you to sync specific G-keys to specific games. This allows you to load a game, and have a specific key set for that particular game.

The original G15 apparently had 18 G-keys. When they redid the G series keyboards, they reduced that number to six programmable buttons (this is the previous model and the one I used). The new refresh (G510) ups the G-keys back to 18 (with the M buttons, this provides you with 54 unique functions per game). This allows games to have a vast combination of keys to choose from and even trumps the G19, the “top of the line keyboard” in terms of numbers. That is, until the inevitable G19 refresh. The G510 has an monochromatic LCD screen that has a couple of really cool widgets available. It works seamlessly with Ventrilo, so if you’re in the middle of a game and you’re playing with new people, you can see who’s talking, comments people leave, etc. It works very well. I use it all the time with the G19. Other games offers specific widgets. I’ve seen this mostly with Lord of the Rings Online, where you can see your stats on the screen. It also has other non-gaming uses, such as media displays. You can see the song track/artist of music you’re playing, for instance. It can also be used as a clock, a POP3 Monitor or as a RSS feed. These are all features that carry over from the G15 and are a step up from the G110 which lacks the LCD screen. This is also a step down from the G19 which offers the same functionality, but in color. The G19 will allow you to watch videos on the screen, but the small screen doesn’t necessarily make it conducive to video watching on a regular basis.

Otherwise, the keyboard operates like you’d expect. It has backlights that allows you to use a multitude of colors to light your keys. It has both integrated USB for audio for a headset and also separate audio/mic jacks with the option to mute it. One nice feature is a slider that allows you to switch between gaming and Windows, which makes it so you accidently do something to minimize your game. It does lack the USB hub options of the G19, though. Overall, the G510 is a great refresh of an already capable keyboard. For those who have the G15 and are thinking about upgrading, I don’t think I’d necessarily do it (or maybe look at the G19, which I will continue to use). But for those new to the Logitech G series keyboards, this is a great intermediate keyboard that offers most of the functionality of the G19 and offers more functionality than their entry level keyboard (G110). No matter which one you go with, I’m really impressed with Logitech’s keyboards.

That keyboard was starting to flicker some and even had paint worn out where my hand would be for gaming. Anyways, one problem I have is you can’t change the angle of the screen like with the g15, and this keyboard’s screen just isn’t at quite the right angle. I can still read what’s on the screen fine, but it could be at a better angle. It doesn’t have brightness changing, only on and off. Which brings me to the choice in colors, I think it’s pretty cool, but find blue to be too dark to see and needs a bit more oomph before I’d choose to use it. That being said I do think the green color looks pretty cool even though my computer has blue led fans which doesn’t match. I do like that the windows button disabler is now a switch so you don’t forget like I had with the g15 and keep wondering why you can’t hit the start button, then think it’s windows and restart. I would have liked to see separate cables for the audio that branch off near the usb end so you don’t have the poor quality of usb sound and make my soundcard useless. It would also be nice if you could plug just the mic into the keyboard and still get audio from a sound card. My mic picks up my computer fans over ventrilo, but not other programs so I thought maybe the keyboard would fix that possibly. I also think it would be neat to have the ability to assign the volume scroll wheel to a certain program as I never adjust my windows volume, just the volume of whatever program I’m using. It would be good too if the mute microphone or headphone was software and not the built in audio hardware. I do think they also did a good job on the size of it as the g15 was a behemoth. I speak of the cons most because that’s usually what I use to decide upon a product, this one still has a lot to offer, but I also say these things so that maybe the manufacturer will hear about these things and edit some of their designs in the future.

Edit: If you’re paying the full $120 price tag it’s probably not worth it as it’s basically a g15 revision 1 with a few tweaks. Also the new LGS(logitech gaming software) from their website has been rather glitchy through many of their versions. I’ve found the 7.00.291 version to be rather stable and only have maybe one or two problems with it. If you don’t experience problems with the original software from the disk I’d suggest to continue to use that, and watch the logitech forums to see if a good stable LGS version comes out.

Chen
While the ipod Touch has wifi and games, its audio and video quality are mediocre. If you sincerely care about your music and videos, the Cowon S9 is superb at bringing out the best of both. Cowon’s legendary sound quality is as one would expect from its latest media player, but the AMOLED screen is what made me decide to purchase this over the itouch. It is 1000x more responsive than LCD and has 10,000 to 1 contrast ratio improvement, making watching videos on this thing quite amazing. Everything is very sharp and high quality videos don’t blur in movement. Best of all, there’s no need to spend six or seven hours converting a 2 hour movie if it’s in AVI or WMV, so it’s much easier to enjoy videos. If you’re more into music, the S9 supports FLAC and OGG for audiophiles, allowing you to enjoy your music the way it was meant to be listened to.

The UI is not THAT clumbsy. It’s not as crystal smooth as the touch, but it’s much better than a lot of touchscreens IMO. The UI takes some getting used to, but once you know all the shortcuts, you’ll be handling it like a pro, easily getting to where you want to go. With a dual core 500mhz processor, it’s more than capable of handling whatever you throw at it, so that’s not what’s causing the occasional lag, but rather some firmware bugs that will likely be resolved quickly.

Cowon loves the S9 and will be sure to improve it even further than it is now so that everyone can enjoy it. Already people are customizing the interface to how they see fit and soon programmers will fix issues and offer alternatives, so there’s no reason not to buy the S9 if you’re afraid of its interface being faulty.

The itouch is the jack of all trades, but the S9 is truly the ace of music and video performance. If you’re looking for quality over quantity, the S9 is sure to please. If you find the lack of uselessly abundant features a turn off, then feel free to try something else.

My Review
By D. Brown
Cowon is famous for it’s media players. Latest in the line is this beautiful S9 Curve. The first thing I look for when I get a new player is the latest firmware. Cowon is on the ball. Version 2.05 came out before mine arrived, and I ordered mine from Jetmall.net the first day they were available in the U.S.. Version 2.06 came out 12/24. We’re already up to 2.30 and the S9 just keeps getting better. I’ve always thought Cowon’s players were bulky and not very practical or portable. The S9 changes the rules. Clearly Cowon has noticed that beautiful, innovative looks can help sell players.

What they didn’t do was forget it’s a media player. Music is best is class. Video is amazing shown on it’s 3.3″ AMOLED widescreen. Photos follow suite. If you’re old enough to need reading glasses the Zoom feature makes apps with text easier to read/see with a simple slide of your finger. File format support is broad. You can drag and drop media directly onto the S9, use Windows Media Player, or use the Jetaudio app that comes included to put media on it.

Now with 32gb capacity you’ll have room for movies and photos worth watching on that beautiful screen. Get the inexpensive video output cable and serve up movies to your TV. You’ll get up to 50 hours music and 10 hours video playback with one battery charge. Don’t forget FLASH game/app support, FM radio with recording, voice recording, and Bluetooth for wireless headphones. There is no Wifi or what it brings, but it’s also $100 less than the iPod Touch of the same memory capacity.

Be sure and keep the firmware updated. Cowon is sending updates out each month, and each one has brought significant improvement. Best touchscreen player of 2009 I’ll predict.

Cons:
Screen difficult to read in bright direct sunlight
Default user interface can be a bit un-intuitive

Conclusion:
This is a great player. The screen is absolutely great, except in direct sunlight, which makes it pretty much unreadable. The price is great for the capacity, and the fact that you can run different user interfaces (UI) means that if you don’t like the way it is by default (which isn’t bad), you can just download one that you like. If you know how to program flash, you can make your own, because Cowon makes it really easy.

The greatest thing is that Cowon is constantly updating the firmware, about once a month. Each one brings new features, such as the latest (as of late July 2009) was gapless playback for many music formats. Just make sure that you rip your music properly.

The S9 has great video format support, including Xvid, DivX, and WMV. The videos look great on the screen, and playback is smooth.

It supports both MSC (Mass storage, like a flash drive) and MTP (media transfer protocol, use Windows Media Player or equivalent to sync), so you can get the best of both worlds.

It’s really a good player if you want a nice looking, touchscreen player, and you are moderately good with computers, but you don’t want Wi-Fi and tons of other features you may not use. My thinking was that I would rather have something that does a few things really well, like the S9, rather than something that stretches itself too thin, like an unnamed Apple product.

In my video, you’ll see the Blimp inside and out, combined with the Rode NTG-2 and boom pole. You’ll see a test on a breezy day, recording sound from a helicopter and then an outdoor effect that is nice and clean despite the breeze. The Blimp itself is a great mount for a shotgun mic. The adjustable brackets inside allow for various mic lengths and diameters. A tool is included to loosen and tighten the bracket screws. Also, included are several sets of rubber bands and cradles to fit your specific mic. Using the handle, you could use it without the boom pole for close interviews or recording live effects up close. The built in XLR cable means you plug your cable into the base of the handle and then to your recording device of choice. The handle adjusts to various angles with a locking mechanism to hold it at the angle you set. The unit is lightweight, which your sound person will thank you for. Finally, you get the “dead wombat” furry cover, that makes a breezy day virtually disappear on the audio track. For an HD version of the video, which is much clearer than the one here, see my YouTube channel, lenswork4 or my blog bentpage dot net.

This combined with the furry muff makes short work of wind noise out on location. I was really impressed with its ability to deliver clear and consistent audio.

I honestly didn’t believe ts effectiveness until I set up a condenser cardioid mic on the floor facing the client and boomed a NG-3 with this blimp overhead. It was night and day. It cut background noise significantly and there was zero indication of wind noise on the track. It cleaned up 40% of the noise that was present in the recordings in comparison to the cardioid. Although mic selection is key in certain situations, having this blimp in your arsenal will help make sure you never miss a vocal again.

(What Else Do You Need To Know?)
By Ron M
Bearing in mind the hundreds of “zeppelin-style” mic systems I’ve used and/or owned over the last four decades, why am I of the opinion that (aside from being cheaper than most of the others) the Rode Blimp’s “the best”?

Among others, here are eight good reasons:

1) It’s cheaper than most of the others.

2) Nobody else matches the amount of “spares” included (at no extra cost) in Rode’s pile of hardware that caters for just about ALL types of mic.

3) The long Allen driver (included) allows matchless ease and solidity of re-configuration.

4) I reckon there’s nothing else out there that’s even CLOSE to being as “hurricane and shock-proof” rugged, which is (I’m guessing) the basis of Rode’s unique TEN year warranty in respect of manufacturing defects.

5) In my experience, the Rode Blimp’s the ONLY system that (mic geometry permitting) can cater for quick and secure re-location of its mounting pivot to virtually ANY point along the full length of its underside. This allows a greater range of comfort-inducing “balance trim” than systems from other manufacturers.

6) Rode’s unique concept behind the “knob-twist preloadable lever action” mechanism (for locking the “tilt” of the Blimp’s pistol-grip) is nothing short of genius. All other pistol grips seem painfully crude (and “last year’s model”) when compared with THIS grip’s well-crafted “spongy” feel, world-beating ergonomics and rugged security.

7) The suspension, the “Blimp Basket” and (included) “Dead Wombat” furry cover yield the best mechanical isolation and acoustic transparency that I’ve ever experienced. The “Dead Wombat’s” drawstring closure leaves others’ fastenings (…Dare I say it?) …for dead.

8) It’s cheaper than most of the others.

Bad points? …Just two:

1) The comfort, ruggedness and lever-flick security built into its amazing, cable-locating pistol grip have made it heavier than its vastly inferior competitors. This additional weight’s only an issue with extended periods spent at the end of a fully-extended fishpole, …when it’s a truly MAJOR pain. This application would demand the additional purchase of Rode’s Universal Blimp Mount, a lightweight adapter that effectively replaces the pistol grip by attaching directly to the fishpole’s thread while maintaining the Blimp’s “end to end” re-balancing capability.

2) It’s a shame there isn’t yet a version long enough to house an “816/MKH70-length” LONG shotgun.

Oh, …and (by the way) …I really should emphasise that

…it’s CHEAPER than most of the others.
